Fair reading copy 1901 Revised ed Colonial Press hardback with navy blue boards, gilt lettering, illustrated and with Special Intro by Colby. Rear board has separated from the book, front board loosening and very weak, first pages of Intro have also come loose, some of the backing of spine has come away and other parts have frayed, corners scuffed, splash stain to lower front corner of board, pages tanned and with deckled page edges as published, quite good reading copy with all pages and illustrations present and tissue guard to frontispiece. Two volumes: 302 + 323 pp. 8vo, original marbled boards with three-quarters calf, gilt spine titles, gold bands. A very handsome set, all original including endpapers. Small stamp from original owner on front endpaper ("Rinaldi"). Bindings are in excellent condition, only lightly worn at extremities. Volume 1 is in VG condition internally but volume II has some staining to the upper margins, not affecting the printed text. A lovely set in above-average condtion. Very Good.

Palermo, London, Heirs of Antoniello degli Antonielli [= John Wolfe], 1584 - 1587. [16]-200, 78-[2], [1]-140 (=138)-[11] ff. 3 major works of the Florentine political philosopher Machiavelli (1469-1527) with an uncommon Italian imprint, but in reality published in (protestant) Elizabethan London. The 3rd work ("I sette libri"), dealing with military art and science, is extremely rare (STC records copies in Oxford, Edinburgh, Reading, Washington and Harvard only). It was a special issue destined for the Frankfurt Book Fair, with a cancel bifolium A 1,8 (H. Seller in "The Library", 1925, p. 112). The present copy presents 2 variant states : on A8r l. 3 from bottom reads "no(n) venga" instead of "non ve(n)ga" - as in the Harvard copy; a "settima figura" called for on S4r has not been printed (blank T2v).
