Echard\'s history of England was the first to be written by a single author. The first volume, from Caesar to James I, was dedicated to the Duke of Ormond, the second and third, reaching 1688, to George I (by which time Ormond had been impeached). The permission for the royal dedication was obtained by William Wake, archbishop of Canterbury, and Joseph Addison, and Echard was rewarded with £300. He finally accomplished what historians had been calling for since the end of the previous century ....’ ODNB.
