Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832), English social philosopher whose influence on the development of economic thought and theory was very great. Burton was an Edinburgh lawyer and a professional writer for literary journals. He established his name as an author with the "Life and Correspondence of David Hume" (1846), in which he threw light for the first time on Hume as an economist. Before editing "Benthamiana" he played an important role in assisting Sir John Bowring in editing the works of Bentham. "The more the matter is investigated the clearer it becomes that Burton, not Bowring, was the effectively responsible editor." - J. H. Burns, Emeritus Professor of History, University College London, in "Bentham and the Scots" (The Bentham Project, 2004). F-5 IN .

The Book-Hunter Etc.
New York, Frederick A. Stokes Company, n.y. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Brown cloth with gilt spine lettering. xvi, 396pp. Tissue-guarded frontispiece, illustrations. Very good. Minor binding wear only -- internally tight and near fine. Tight and nice later reprint edition of the 1862 books-about-books classic by the noted Scottish attorney and economist (1809-81). Some attach various dates to this undated edition -- often 1895 or 1883 -- but seemingly without evidence; certainly late 19th century. A lovely copy.
