Elsie Locke - Peace People: A History Of Peace Activities In New Zealand

Hazard Press 1992 Paperback, 335pp. "To know what has gone before is to gain a firmer grasp on the events and issues that concern us today. New Zealand\'s peace movement, now so diverse and widespread, has its origins in ancient Maori times and in the early days of colonial settlement. Its forerunners include mediators, pacifists, promoters of social justice and of peaceful relationships, and opponents of specific conflicts. These stories of amazing persistence reveal many forgotten heroines and heroes, men, women and children. "Peace people" . explores their responses to the trends and crises of our history, and includes some of the author\'s personal experiences. It brings the record up to 1975, when the widley supported initiatives of the Kirk-Rowling Government towards a nuclear free Pacific were cut off by the election of the Muldoon Government."--Back cover. Dmage to top and bottom of end paper. Foxing to top edge of pages.", (ISBN: 9780908790203). Good.

Aesop; Rev. Thomas James - Aesop&Apos;S Fables: A New Version, Chiefly from Original Sources

London, John Murray, 1882 . Cloth. A charming collection of four 19th century copies of Aesop's fables, all of which feature the illustrations of John Tenniel. Four volumes of Rev. Thomas James edition of the fables of Aesop, which were first published in this edition in 1848.Each of these volumes is the edition of James, and features illustrations from John Tenniel and Wolf.Illustrated with over one-hundred vignette illustrations from Tenniel in each volume. Lewis Carroll was so impressed by John Tenniel's animated designs for this edition of the fables that he chose the Tenniel to illustrate 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland&apos.Present here are: the 1852 edition of this work; the 1863 edition, being the forty-eighth thousand; the 1868 edition, being the sixty-third thousand, and the 1882 edition, being the seventy-eighth thousand.Aesop's Fables are a collection of brief moral tales attributed to a storyteller believed to have lived in ancient Greece around the 6th century BCE. These tales typically feature animals as characters who embody human traits and behaviours, teaching practical life lessons through their interactions. Classic fables like "The Tortoise and the Hare," "The Boy Who Cried Wolf," and "The Ant and the Grasshopper" use simple narratives to convey enduring wisdom about virtues such as perseverance, honesty, and hard work. With a thirty-two page catalogue to the rear of the 1852 volume, dated January 1852, and another to the 1868 volume, dated April 1868.Housed in a cloth clamshell case, these four volumes were collected by Eric Sweet, whose bookplate appears to the interior of the clamshell. In the publisher's original cloth bindings and paper wraps, housed in a cloth clamshell. The earliest volume is in paper wraps, with losses of paper to the back strip, and significant rubbing to wraps. Rear hinge of 1863 volume strained, but firmly held. Hinges of 1868 volume strained, but firmly held. Clamshell fine. Internally, 1852 volume strained throughout, with remaining volumes lightly strained. Pages a touch age toned, with instances of light spotting throughout. Good . Ill.: John Tenniel; Wolf. Good .
