Edward Wedlake Brayley; Gideon Mantell. - A Topographical History of Surrey
London, G. Willis, 1850. Cloth. A fascinating and copiously illustrated study of the topography of Surrey by Edward Wedlake Brayley, complete in five volumes. Edward Wedlake Brayley was an English antiquary and topographer, born in Lambeth, Surrey in 1773. Brayley is best remembered for his friendship and frequent collaboration with the English antiquary, author and editor John Britton. Britton and Brayley became joint editors of 'The Beauties of England and Wales', a series of books describing the topography and local history of England and Wales, and both men wrote numerous other topographical works. With a section on geology by the notable English obstetrician, geologist and palaeontologist Gideon Mantell. Copiously illustrated throughout with a frontispiece, numerous in text wood-engravings to each volume, and: Fifteen steel engravings to volume I, two of which are folding, and two of which are coloured. Lacking plate of 'Chapel and Hall in Ditto, Interiors&apos. 'Windlesham Church' has been bound as frontispiece. Sixteen steel engravings to volume II, one of which is folding, with 'Ruin at Virginia Water' bound as frontispiece. Nineteen steel engravings to volume III, one of which is folding, with 'The Duke of Buccleuch's Villa, Richmond' bound as frontispiece.
