Karl Baedeker [ed.] - Palestine and Syria Handbook for Travellers
Leipsic , Karl Baedeker, Publisher , 1894. Cloth. A scarce second edition of this Baedeker handbook to Palestine and Syria, complete with folding maps. The second edition, revised and augmented. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Illustrated with seventeen maps (nine folding), forty-four plans (two folding) and a folding panorama of Jerusalem. Collated, complete. This is notably the edition which caused a famous lawsuit brought by Howard (a hotel owner in Jaffa and Jerusalem) against Baedeker with reference to some disparaging remarks about his hotels. Howard won the lawsuit and Baedeker was ordered to remove the critical comments. However in the next edition Howard's hotels were omitted and his business suffered greatly as a result.Offering introductory information concerning hotels, cafes, bazaars, mosques, climate, history of art and more, as well as forty-two routes and excursions spanning across Jerusalem, southern Palestine, Samaria, the Lebanon, central Syria and northern Syria. These 'Baedeker' handbooks set the standard for authoritative guidebooks for tourists, conveniently designed to be carried around in a pocket and available for reference by the user. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, cloth is darkened and rubbed, with fading to the spine and a couple ink marks to the front board. Internally, front free endpaper and half title detached but present, otherwise firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the odd spot. Contemporary ink inscription and reference label to the front free endpaper. Very Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Very Good .

Venezia, Andrea Poletti, 1711. Large 4to (26.6 x 20.6 cm). Half title, title page, 76 pp.; four hand-coloured engraved plates on three leaves. Contemporary blind soft boards, spine with later cloth strip. = Two papers by Count Marsigli, bound together with a single title, being the first edition of his famous work on the history of the seas, and a treatise on the scale insect causing galls in oak trees from which crimson dye was originally extracted. The first paper deals with red coral, with description and illustration of the living polypes. Marsigli was the first to understand that corals were not plants. The second paper, also finely illustrated, shows the true origin and nature of the crimson dye, giving a detailed description of the coccid genus Kermes (Hemiptera). Both papers are very rare. Small, weak, old stamp on front board and half title, edges slightly frayed, paper repair to lower edge of title page, otherwise a very good and clean copy. Nissen ZBI, 2700.
