London, Charles Knight , 1833-1836. First edition. Leather. Six volumes of this extensive biographical portrait series, uniformly bound in full calf and complete with all engraved plates. Comprising Vols I-VI, bound in three volumes. Lacking Vol VII. Uniformly bound in full blind-stamped calf, with raised bands and gilt detailing. A terrific collection of biographical sketches, totalling 144 eminent figures. "Under the Superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge". Each volume is collated and complete with twenty-four engraved portrait plates. Volume I (1833) includes figures such as Dante Alighieri, Sir Humphrey Davy, John Milton and Moliere. Volume II (1833) includes figures such as Erasmus, Lord Rodney, J. H. Wollaston and Peter the Great. Volume III (1834) includes figures such as Henry IV, Edmund Burke, Isaac Barrow and Galileo. Volume IV (1835) includes figures such as William III, Napoleon Bonaparte, John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, and Frederic II. Volume V (1835) includes figures such as William Shakespeare, William Cowper, Jonathan Swift and Sir Joshua Reynolds. Volume VI (1836) includes figures such as Raffaello Sanzio, Madame de Stael, Godfrey William Leibnitz and Dr. Cartwright. Uniformly bound in full blind-stamped calf, with raised bands and gilt detailing. Externally, smart, with wear to the spines and rubbing to the extremities. Marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with a few scattered spots, often concentrated to the plates, not affecting the illustrations themselves, but the space around. More frequent scattered spotting throughout Vol III-IV. Very Good . Ill.: Numerous Illustrators. Very Good .
