Hon. George N. Curzon - Persia and the Persian Question

The illustrated first edition of Curzon's detailed history of Persia, in which he aimed to inform the British about Persia's importance in the rivalry between the British and Russian Empires in Central Asia. The first edition of this work, complete in two volumes.Illustrated with three colour plates to volume I, six colour plates to volume II, fourteen plates to volume I, and twenty-nine plates to volume II. Collated, lacking the large folding map which should appear to the rear of volume I.George Nathaniel Curzon later become Viceroy of India and a was leading figure in British imperial policy, travelling extensively in Persia in the 1880s. Curzon argued that Persia was a critical buffer state whose independence was essential to maintaining British supremacy in India and thwarting Russian expansion. His work offers detail about Persian geography, politics, and society, criticising both the Persian government for its inefficiency and corruption, and British diplomacy for its neglect of the region. With a thirty-two page publisher's catalogue to the rear of volume I.Volume I half title detached and loosely inserted.With the bookplate of Dauntsey's School to the front pastedown of volume I.A fascinating work in which Curzon advocates for a more assertive British role in Persian affairs to counterbalance Russian influence.
