[Beston, Henry], MacDonald, Thoreau, illustrator - A Compelling Collaboration of Two Naturalists in Celebration of the Holiday Season. "with Warm Good Wishes from Chimney Farm in Maine.

NORTHERN FARM, MAINE, Beston, Henry, 1948. Original autographed, stamped Christmas postcard. Illustration from Henry Beston's NORTHERN FARM; A CHRONICAL OF MAINE. MacDonald Thoreau. Original autographed, stamped Christmas postcard. Illustration from Henry Beston's NORTHERN FARM; A CHRONICAL OF MAINE. Published in 1948, NORTHERN FARM featured cover and chapter illustrations by renowned Canadian artist, Thoreau MacDonald. This illustration appears on page 57 as the introduction to chapter XI as can be seen on the attached image from the book. The "Book" is not included. This card is personally addressed to long-time friend and photographer Clayton Smith "With Merry Christmas, too, to house and household! Henry and Elizabeth Beston". Postmarked from Chimney Farm in Nobleboro, Maine. While undated, likely 1952 (based upon postage stamp). ---------------------- This is a compelling collaboration of two naturalists in celebration of the holiday season. HENRY BESTON was an American writer and naturalist, and is considered one of the fathers of the modern environmental movement. His now classic observations of Cape Cod are captured in his classic, THE OUTERMOST HOUSE, written after Beston spent what he called "a year of life on the Great Beach of Cape Cod", and has been called one of the motivating factors behind the establishment of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Author Rachel Carson said that Beston was the only author who ever influenced her writing. Canadian artist THOREAU MACDONALD was also considered a designer, calligrapher, writer, publisher, farmer, naturalist, nature lover and conservationist. Thoreau MacDonald was self-taught but worked with his father, Group of Seven member J.E.H. MacDonald. Colour blindness forced him to work mainly in black and white. Thoreau MacDonald contributed illustrations to some 150 journals, novels and books of poetry, and he was a founding member of the Canadian Group of Painters. His graphic work and paintings can be found in many important public and private collections, including the McMichael Collection, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Hart House at the University of Toronto and the National Gallery of Canada. Ill.: MacDonald Thoreau.
