| [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] New edition, reprint of the augmented edition of the second volume from 1740. It is illustrated with a portrait and a curious allegorical figure in the first volume, as well as a large title vignette to the epistle. Title pages in red and black. Contemporary full glazed marbled calf binding. Red morocco title label and volume labels. 3 corners slightly bumped. Light crack to the upper joint of volume II. Despite the noted defects, handsome copy, with very fine appearance. Work of a free thinker of the Enlightenment, the philosophy of common sense is an examination of prejudices and all branches of knowledge in light of the postulate of scepticism; for the author this postulate of uncertainty is salutary as to the truth of things; the book was judged sufficiently dangerous to be banned by Parliament and d\'Argens thus wrote most of his books in Holland, safe from arrest. Though praised by Voltaire, the work was condemned by Kant. *

John Hill Burton - The Book-Hunter Etc.

Edinburgh, William Blackwood & Sons, 1862 . First edition. Leather. A wonderful example of the first edition of John Hill Burton's delightful account of the history of bibliophilia, gathered together from previously published articles. The first edition of this work in book form, being collected from articles originally published in Blackwood's.This work is a reflective and often witty exploration of bibliomania, collecting, and the culture of books and libraries. The author combines literary history, and personal observation, examining the habits of obsessive collectors, the fate of rare volumes, and the value of books in intellectual life. This remains a classic in the literature of book collecting. In a full calf signed binding from R. Nelson of Glasgow. In a full calf signed binding with gilt detailing. Externally, excellent, with light rubbing to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age toned, with the odd spot, and with the odd marginal pencil notation. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .

Dennis Hopper 187695 - Dennis Hopper - Photographs 1961-1967

Taschen, 2011. Linnen band met stofomslag. Pp: 542. A reluctant icon captures a decade of cultural transformation During the 1960s, Dennis Hopper carried a camera everywhere-on film sets and locations, at parties, in diners, bars and galleries, driving on freeways and walking on political marches. He photographed movie idols, pop stars, writers, artists, girlfriends, and complete strangers. Along the way he captured some of the most intriguing moments of his generation with a keen and intuitive eye. A reluctant icon at the epicenter of that decade's cultural upheaval, Hopper documented the likes of Tina Turner in the studio, Andy Warhol at his first West Coast show, Paul Newman on set, and Martin Luther King during the Civil Rights March from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. From a selection of photographs compiled by Hopper and gallerist Tony Shafrazi-more than a third of them previously unpublished-this extensive volume distills the essence of Hopper's brilliantly prodigious photographic career. Also included are introductory essays by Tony Shafrazi and legendary West Coast art pioneer Walter Hopps, and an extensive biography by journalist Jessica Hundley. With excerpts from Victor Bockris's interviews of Hopper's famous subjects, friends, and family, this volume is an unprecedented exploration of the life and mind of one of America's most fascinating personalities. After our limited and art editions, this book is now available in an unlimited trade edition. ISBN: 9783836527262. Cond./Kwaliteit: Redelijk.
