Sir Archibald Alison - History of Europe from the Fall of Napoleon in Mdcccxv to the Accession of Louis Napoleon in Mdccclii

London, William Blackwood and Sons, 1854-59. Cloth. A fascinating eight volumes set of the historical work of Sir Archibald, 'History of Europe', in a uniform binding. Eight Volumes of Alison's History of Europe. From the library of the Titley Court Estate. Titley Court was home to the Greenly family for over 500 years. The Greenly family have a long and fascinating history, perhaps most famous for the life and libary of Elizabeth Greenly, later Lady Elizabeth Greenly, who was noted as a collector and patron of literature and the arts. The Greenly library consists mostly of her collection of contemporary Regency literature, however it was expanded after her death by various members of her extended family. Notable among these are Edward Greenly, a famous Victorian geologist, and William Bradford, a founding father who travelled to America on the Mayflower and who was closely associated with the Greenlys at Titley Court through marriage. The rich and diverse history of the Greenlys at Titley Court is reflected in the broad selection of works found in the library. Without Index volume as published later. Collated, complete. Sir Archibald Alison was a Scottish advocate and historian. His History of Europe was his first publication and his chief work. It is considered to be the first scholarly English-language work to study the French Revolution. Since its first publication History has been published in many foreign languages. In full cloth bindings with gilt stamped spines and blind stamped boards. Externally, smart. Bumping to head and tail of spines as well as the extremities, particularly the board corners.
