(Rear cover has some brown spots; first 5 printed lvs. have torn off top corners with loss of a few letters in top lines, also slightly affecting title plate that has some superficial damage as well. Old price inscr. on verso of front endp.: "2 Stuyvers"). ¶ BMN I: 417. Zachert p.235. 3rd edition published in the year of author's decease (1st appeared 1678) . Justification foreword ('Den drucker tot den leser') with printer's signature in ink. - In this most widely known work of the period on the subject, Dr. Bontekoe recommends the drinking of tea from 8 to 10 cups a day, given that he himself consumed such quantities, and claims to drink 50 to 200 cups daily. The treatise is preceded by a two-page laudatory poem by 'V.O.'. Added are a chapter on the healthy effects of coffee and another on chocolate, and 'an apology from the author against his slanderers' (he may have been under the employment of the Dutch East India Company, then having the monopoly on the tea market, while making these recommendations).
