ADDISON, SIR WILLIAM - Farmhouses in the English Landscape

London, Robert Hale. 1986, First Edition. (ISBN: 070902813X). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Ill.: Bill, Joan. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket. 175 pages. 22 line illustrations by Joan Bill. 59 photographs. In this charming and affectionate study, the respected countryside historian Sir William Addison examines the role of the farmhouse in English rural life. Much of the Englishness of the landscape is defined by rustic dwellings, constructed in a variety of individual styles. The hardy brick and flint farmhouses of East Anglia contrast with the timber-framed cruck constructions of the West Midlands, and the austere stone slab and slatework of Cumbria bears no similarity to the dainty cob and thatch cottages of the affluent south. Weatherboarding on Essex farmhouses characterizes the region just as chalk-mud walling is typical of the houses of Wiltshire. From Roman times to the present Addison traces the development of these distinctive buildings, describing the characteristics of each. NOT EX LIB 16. Fine/Fine.
