Kinsella, W. P.; Allen Sapp (1928-2015) - Two Spirits Soar: The Art of Allen Sapp; the Inspiration of Allan Gonor [Signed by Allen Sapp]

Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Stoddart Publishing Co. Limited, 1990. First Edition. Hardcover. pp. 134. Oblong 4to. measuring 24 x 31 cm. Publisher's navy-blue boards with silver lettering to the spine. Richly illustrated with many full-colour plates. Light bump to the head of spine, else, near fine. Contents without blemish with firm, sound binding; near fine and housed in original, unclipped, lightly rubbed dustjacket. Overall, very good+. SIGNED in ink by Sapp to the title page. Two Spirits Soar celebrates the distinctive talent of the Canadian painter Allen Sapp, a Cree from Saskatchewan, and his relationship with Dr. Allan Gonor, mentor and friend. Sapp specializes in paintings depicting native life as he remembers it on the Red Pheasant Reserve near North Battleford, with subjects ranging from social activities and farming chores to full-dress ceremonies. These remarkable examples of Canadian art might never have existed were it not for Dr. Gonor, a man of uncommon insight who early recognized Sapp's ability and encouraged him to paint from his own experience rather than trying to copy other artists' modes of expression. Sapp's career flourished after Gonor's excellent advice and support in the generous style of the traditional artist's patron. The result: finely detailed paintings richly evocative of life in a close-knit community, full of warmth and nostalgia. In the text, W.P. Kinsella, a fiction writer well known for his attraction to native Canadian subjects, compares his own passion for writing, as he was growing up, with Sapp's similar youthful dedication to art. Kinsella then explores the productive relationship between Sapp and Gonor to provide a very satisfying picture of this unique and important painter's life and work".

Quigley, Martin S., foreword by T. Ryle Dwyer, - A U.S. Spy in Ireland.

Dublin, Marino Books, (1999). 1st ptg. VG PB. During WWII the U.S. sent several intelligence agents undercover to Ireland including the head of the whole operation. William J. Donovan. One Martin Quigley retained his cover in Ireland, commercial work on behalf of the American film industry during his stay in 1943. His job was to check on the beliefs that existed abroad about Irish neutrality and to corroborate or reject what previous agents had found. Several hundred pages of his findings in documents were declassified in 1997 by the U.S. govt. Far from being pro-German the Irish Govt tacitlys supported the allied position while finding it politic to maintain the semblance of neutrality.
