[1870] | 40.5 x 27.9 cm | Relié | Exceptionnel album contenant 54 caricatures originales et parfois légendées réalisées à l\'encre de chine, au crayon, à l\'aquarelle, (dont 3 petits dessins au crayon sur feuilles volantes) et des feuillets blancs.  Cet album amusant et personnel, visiblement composé par un artiste amateur, semble décrire les diverses aventures et mésaventures de quelques personnages récurrents, apparemment tous liés de près ou de loin à l\'Ambassade de France près la Porte ottomane dont un morceau de papier à en-tête se trouve intercalé entre deux feuillets. Reliure en plein vélin ivoire à recouvrement, dos lisse orné de filets rouges, un accroc restauré en tête du dos, filet rouge encadrant les plats, quelques taches sur les plats, gardes et contreplats de papier peigné, tranches rouges, reliure de l\'époque. L\'album contient également 1 lettre autographe signé à l\'encre noire agrémentées de caricatures en marges adressées à M. H. Fournier commençant par ""Cher Washington n°2"" Le destinataire de la lettre satirique ornée de dessins insérée dans l\'album semble être le diplomate Hugues Marie Henri Fournier (1821-1898) nommé en 1877 ambassadeur à Constantinople. Les aventures du petit groupe, identifié par des légendes au crayon noir, semblent commencer à Florence en septembre 1872 pour se poursuivre à Rome. On trouvera ainsi une aquarelle montrant le temple de Vesta. En décembre 1872 d\'après la légende à l\'encre, le groupe composé des Vicomtes Bresson, de Mareuil, d\'Hauterive et d\'Hérisson est caricaturé à Rome, en visite au théâtre, au Capitole, à cheval, etc. Un panorama aquarellé caricature de même la Guerre de 1870 et ses protagonistes. Apparaissent également, caricaturés au crayon auprès de Fournier, le général de Castelbajac et le baron de Talleyrand. On notera un beau portrait au crayon de Khalil Bey. Le célèbre diplomate ottoman et collectionneur né au Caire en 1831 et mort à Istanbul en 1879, venait en effet, après son ambassade à Vienne de 1868, de revenir à Constantinople pour épouser en 1872 la princesse égyptienne Nazli Fazl. Outre son rôle dans la Guerre de Crimée, il est connu pour sa prestigieuse collection de tableaux qui, vendue aux enchères en 1868, contenait des oeuvres de Courbet (dont l\'Origine du monde), d\'Ingres, de Delacroix, etc... Le comte d\'Osmond, Alfred de Courtois ont aussi leur caricature. On trouvera également dans l\'album une vue intitulée Pointe imaginaire du sérail, et une aquarelle représentant une partie de Lawn-Tennis. Unique ensemble. | [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] Exceptional album comprising 54 original caricatures, some captioned, executed in India ink, pencil, and watercolour (including three small pencil sketches on loose leaves), together with several blank leaves.This entertaining and highly personal album, evidently compiled by an amateur artist, appears to chronicle the various adventures and misadventures of a small cast of recurring characters, all seemingly connected in one way or another with the French Embassy to the Ottoman Porte, as suggested by a piece of official letterhead inserted between two leaves.Contemporary full ivory vellum with yapped edges, smooth spine ruled in red, a restored split at the head of the spine, red fillets framing the boards, some marking to the covers, comb-marbled endpapers, red edges.The album also includes one autograph letter signed in black ink, embellished with marginal caricatures, addressed to Mr H. Fournier and opening with ""Cher Washington n°2"".The recipient of this satirical, illustrated letter appears to be the diplomat Hugues Marie Henri Fournier (1821–1898), appointed ambassador to Constantinople in 1877.The adventures of the small group, identified by captions in black pencil, seem to begin in Florence in September 1872 and continue on to Rome.The album includes, among other scenes, a watercolour depicting the Temple of Vesta.In December 1872, according to an ink caption
