A dextre : Espagne; à senestre : Farnèse (""d\'or à six fleurs de lis d\'azur posées 3,2,1). | [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] First bilingual edition, with French facing Greek, translated by Pierre Coste, with his footnotes. Title page printed in red and black. Extended preface by Pierre Coste. Copy bearing the arms of Queen Elisabeth Farnese of Spain, Princess of Parma, queen from 1714 to 1746. A woman of power whose policies profoundly influenced Spain. Double coat of arms surmounted by a closed royal crown, encircled by the collars of the Orders of the Holy Spirit and the Golden Fleece. Dexter: Spain; sinister: Farnese (""or with six fleurs-de-lys azure, 3,2,1""). An intriguing feature of the queen’s arms: the collars of the Orders of the Holy Spirit and of the Golden Fleece, although these orders were never bestowed upon women. Contemporary full speckled blond calf binding. Spine with raised bands richly gilt. Crimson morocco title-piece. Arms gilt-stamped at the centre of the covers. Triple fillet border on the covers. All edges gilt. Slight wear to headcaps. Upper joint largely split. Lower joint split at head.  * Hieron is a dialogue by Xenophon between a philosopher, Simonides, and a king, Hieron; through Simonides’ questions emerges a vision of kingship. As the edition dates from 1711, and Elisabeth Farnese only acceded to royal dignity in 1714, the association of this text with the rare arms of the young and newly crowned queen takes on a distinctly symbolic dimension: a reflection on power and on the way of preparing for it through the reading of the Ancients.

- The Crown of Denmark: Disposed of by a Religious Minister Through a Fraudulent Treaty. With Reprint of Denmark and the Duchies

London, Privately Printed , 1853. Hardback. A privately printed political work from David Urquhart, in which he discusses the 1852 London Protocol and the schism of Denmark and the Duchies. Privately printed. A very scarce copy. A discussion of the recently signed London Protocol of 1852, an international treaty which affirmed the integrity of the Danish federation and where duchies of Schleswig (a Danish fief) and Holstein and Lauenburg (German fiefs) were joined by personal union with the Kingdom of Denmark. Together with a second edition printing of 'Denmark and the Duchies', with notes on the assassination of the Sultan, Austrian occupation of the Duchies etc.Written by David Urquhart, a British diplomat and politician. Throughout his own piece, he makes his opinion of this treaty known, renouncing it as a scheme to set aside the Danish succession and aligning it with his notably anti-Russian views. Also included for reference is an article from The Times announcing the treaty and a protest of the Prince of Schleswig-Holstein. With a dual-spread genealogical table. Collated, lacking a second folding genealogical table. Bound in later paper covered boards, with spine label. Externally, excellent, with minimal signs of shelf wear. Small bookplate of one Richard Luckett to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with toning and a light spotting to the first and last few pages. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Very Good Indeed .
