By One Who Went to It [Warren Burton] - The District School As It Was

London, Carter, Hendee and Col, 1833. First Edition. Hardcover. Size: 16mo 6" - 7" tall. An apparent First Edition, from 1833 (Howes), with multiple editions published again 1838, 1850, 1852, 1897, and 1928, at least. Bound in mottled, wrinkled thin leather over boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, rubbed and abraded paper label to spine, light chipping to spine head. Quite a didactic novel, in 156 pp., published anonymously, meant to point out shortcomings in public education in the rural hinterlands of early America. The author, Warren Burton, was a Harvard-educated Unitarian minister, mostly "at-large" but well thought of. The biographer of a Christian church-respite, Brook Farm, Lindsay Swift, notes that he spent about three years there, then left without notice in 1844 and disappeared. No front endpaper, previous owner's inscription at first free endpaper.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Fair

- Constructions n°31 : Meubles & accessoires

Olivier-Pinot | Épinal s. d. [circa 1880-1900] | 39 x 49 cm Olivier-Pinot | Épinal s. d. | [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] Épinal print, colour lithograph, large format, printed on thick paper. A small repaired tear in the margin (2 cm) without any damage to the print, otherwise very fine condition, colours very well preserved. These sheets are cardboard constructions or models, on which a pattern was printed. This pattern must be cut out then assembled to build various objects or life scenes. The Épinal printing house published several series of cut-out models including the ""Grandes Constructions"" in 39 x 49 cm format, the ""Moyennes Constructions"" and the ""Petites Constructions"". From 1880 to 1908, constructions were published featuring architecture, costumes, boats and various vehicles. During this same period, paper theatres or ""théâtre chez soi"" also enjoyed great success. This toy model developed and lasted until the Second World War. Once sold by peddlers, Épinal prints owe their name to Jean-Charles Pellerin, who was the first printer to publish this type of print in series, and who lived in the town of Épinal (Vosges). The subjects are very varied but generally revolve around religion, history (French Revolution, battles, military uniforms), or drawn from successful novels. Épinal imagery has its origins in popular art born in the 15th century intended primarily for the illiterate public of the countryside. Originally, the image is engraved on a wooden block and printing is done using a hand press. It is then coloured by means of stencils. In the 19th century, lead casts were made from the engraved wood blocks: stereotypes, which allowed production to be increased. In 1820, lithography was adopted, which induced a radical change in style, with finer drawings. In 1900, colouring was still done by stencil, thanks to a machine that could colour 300 images per hour, the Aquatype. *

[ADAMS (Aaron Chester)]: - Mother.

No place, No publisher, [c. 1893]. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 8vo, 198 x 147 mms., pp. [2] 3 - 26 [28 - 32 blank], stitched within cream cardboard covers, with gilt lettering, "H. S. A. / 1813-1892." on front cover. The author is given as simply "Father" at the foot of p. 25, then as "A. C. A." at the foot of the last page of text, p. 26. A clue to the topic of the book is found, however, on p. 24, where the subject of the memoir is said to have been buried "on the southern slope of Wethersfield cemetery". From the context, it is clear that Wethersfield in Connecticut is meant. A consultation of the records of this cemetery, which are available online, show only one possible match at http//wethersfieldhistory.org/services/burying_ground/map: that being Harriet Sargent Adams (1813-1892, who married to a man who bore the initials A. C. A. This is the Congregational minister and writer Aaron Chester Adams (1815-1905). They are buried in the same plot. Aaron Chester Adams is perhaps best known today for his Historic Sketch of the First Church of Christ in Wethersfield (1877). WorldCat attributes a half-dozen publications to him in total. This book, Mother, is Aaron Chester Adam's biography of his wife, Harriet Sargent Adams. At the foot of p. 25, he notes that he wrote his account from "Wethersfield, Conn." in "February, 1893". The book is not merely personal, however, as the reader gets a vivid picture of historical life in nineteenth-century Connecticut, with some earlier scenes set in Maine and Massachusetts. Not in WorldCat, COPAC, KVK, British Library, or Library of Congress.
