New York: Prentice-Hall, Inc, 1941. 1st edition. INSCRIBED by the author "..with affectionate good wishes from the 'crude' American.". Blue cloth binding, gilt stamped lettering to spine and front board. xii, 498, [2 (blank)] pp. One folding chart. 9-1/4" x 6-1/4". Moderate wear to binding (rubbing and age-toning to cloth). Paper slightly age-toned. "Total defense must plan to fight, to win, and above all to survive war. This means some plan along lines similar to the experience tested by the United States War Industries Board of 1917 and 1918. It must mobilize men, money, materials, morale - all resources - to give to the war-making agencies and those allied with them, such as shipping and blockage, what they want when they want it, without unnecessary deprivation or exploitation of civilians. This volume contains documents which will show what should be done and what should be avoided.".

Borden, Mary [1886 - 1968], The FORBIDDEN ZONE
Borden, Mary [1886 - 1968]
The FORBIDDEN ZONE
Garden City, N. Y.: Doubleday, Doran and Company, Inc, 1930. 1st US edition. Black cloth binding with gilt stamped lettering. Blue topstain. Dust jacket. [12], 211, [3 (blank)] pp. Frontispiece, on coated paper, of Percy Smith's 1916 drypoint image, "Solitude", of Thiepval, near the Somme. 8vo. Square & tight, a VG+ book in a similar, price-clipped jacket. "Just behind the trenches in that forbidden zone where the front line hospitals were crowded with the dying the mutilated and the maimed, Mary Borden served as a war nurse." [front flap]. From a wealthy Chicago family, Borden, at the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, used her own considerable money to equip and staff a field hospital for French soldiers close to the Western Front in which she served as a nurse from 1914 until the end of the war." This work is a fictionalised and experimental memoir which mixes prose and poetry to give an account of Borden's experience during the war, which includes a striking set of sketches and short stories, and "was published in the same year as A Farewell to Arms, Good-Bye to All That and All Quiet on the Western Front but seems more akin to the modernist writings of her contemporaries Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein or Edith Sitwell. Like many writers of the time, Borden reached for new techniques and forms to describe the unprecedented scale and impact of a global conflict. Contemporary readers were disturbed by the graphic – sometimes hallucinatory – quality of her work, coming as it did from a woman with first-hand experience of life on the front line. A present-day editor of her work, Paul O'Prey, contends that Borden is 'the great forgotten voice of the war – the outstanding female voice of the first world war. Her poetry can stand alongside anything.' The Forbidden Zone contains five long poems that describe what she saw and did working in the military hospital, which are full of passionate energy and compassion. O'Prey finds them reminiscent of Walt Whitman who also tended to the wounded on the battlefield, in his case during the American Civil War." [Wiki].

Portland: Morris Brothers, Inc. the Premier Municipal Bond House, (n. d.). 1st printing (presumed). Ca. 1919-20. White printed paper. Broadside, printed recto only. B/w graveyard illustration to left edges. 20" x 11-1/4". Minimal wear to broadside. Faint vertical crease to middle, two faint horizontal creases. An about VG example. "Sixty thousand of our American Boys lie among the poppies of Flanders' Fields in France. To them only is the war over. They have paid the price in full. To countless other thousands of these boys returning home maimed and broken the war will still go on; they will be paying the price every day, during the remainder of their lives. Can we who stayed at home carelessly and thoughtlessly assume the 'war is over' attitude until our balance of account is paid - until we have redeemed our pledge - to bear the final cost no matter what its amount?" This poster is "one of 176 advertisements inserted simultaneously in every newspaper in the State of Oregon on behalf of the success of the Victory Liberty Loan". The information included on the poster describes the "Victory Liberty Loan" as the "Parent Bond of Them All" and draws the Men & Women of Oregon up to participate.. "The imprint of fame upon the name of our fair state will turn to a stain of shame if we do not meet the obligation this Victory Loan represents. You are face to face with the real test of citizenship - true Americanism. Let this test find you measuring up one hundred per cent loyal." No holdings found on OCLC. Rare in the trade.
