Scarce work by Henry Baerlein, prolific writer, often on Eastern Europe, also wrote under the name of Henry Bernard and George Birmingham - "MR. BAERLEIN\'S leisurely account of his equally leisurely journey over the hills and dales and through the fields and forests of Ruthenia is a delicate blend of ironic charm and haphazard literary gypsying among the sturdy and almost illiterate peasant folk and villagers of this obscure little country -- a country bent upon making the most of its recently discovered self-determination." .

He translated D\'Annuzio, Boccaccio and Pirandello into Hungarian and later travelled to Italy. Despite his background he joined the PNF. Paperback.

London, Chapman and Hall, 1853. Contemporary or later textured cream cloth, gilt lettered morocco labels, viii+410pp. 6 two-tone lithographs and 6 vignettes as called for. Moncrieffe "Sur Espérance" ornate bookplate to paste-down. Spine age-darkened, labels a little chipped and scored, one plate slightly protruding but a very good, clean, tight copy. Charles Boner, poet and travel-writer, one time tutor to John Constable\'s children, left England to take up a post in Regensburg with Maximilian Karl, 6th Prince of Thurn and Taxis. Boner settled and married in Germany. He published a number of books of poetry but his seminal work was the comprehensive \' Transylvania, its Products and People\', (1865) - describing an area at the time under Austria. Hardcover.

The Nile: Notes for Travellers in Egypt. Eighth Edition. With Two Maps, Plans of Temples, and Numerous Illustrations.
London & Cairo, Thos. Cook & Son, 1902. Original limp brown cloth. Spine and upper board lettered gilt, with gilt cartouches and hieroglyphs to upper cover with same pattern in blind to lower. Marbled endpapers and fore-edges, engraved frontis. map and one folding internally (by Johnston of Edinburgh), xxvi+674pp. profusely illustrated with b/w plates and very many in-text hieroglyphs and sketches. A lovely bright and tight copy. Mild creasing to spine, edges and spine ends just a little rubbed. One or two foldings protruding minimally. Very occasional light pencil underscoring. First published in 1890, this guide ran to many editions. Sir Ernest Wallis Budge, celebrated Victorian Egyptologist, orientalist, philologist and prolific writer compiled it on the instigation of Thos. Cook and Son while he was Keeper of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities at the British Museum. The guide was to be presented to every Cook passenger on the Nile tourist steamers, so that they would: "no longer be liable to be misled (unintentionally) by Dragomans" (Intro.). As well as comprehensive information on the 'antiquities and their history', the handbook includes some 25 pages on Egyptian and Coptic writing.

"Captain Harry Willes Darell de Windt (9 April 1856, Paris - 30 November 1933, Bournemouth) was the aide-de-camp to his brother-in-law Charles Brooke, Rajah of Sarawak (Harry\'s sister Margaret was Brooke\'s wife), and is best known as an explorer and travel writer.
