Brett was originally a shipping reporter on the "Auckland Star" and an account of the smaller ships that traded inter-colonial across the Tasman Sea. A second volume was later published in 1928. CONDITION Blue bds has slight wear and stain to rear, pp 368 with 161 illus of ships, locations and captains portraits, rear page of index pasted to rear bd which has handwritten ships names and ladings. Previous owners names to front pastedown and free end page, moderately handled copy, clean with toned eps. OVERWEIGHT. Good/No Jacket.

London, United Kingdom, Macmillan. 1891, First Edition. Cloth, 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. George Brydges Rodney, 1st Baron Rodney (1718 - 1792) - British naval officer, politician. "1749 he was appointed governor and commander-in-chief of Newfoundland, with the rank of Commodore, it being usual at that time to appoint a naval officer, chiefly on account of the fishery interests. During the Seven Years' War Rodney rendered important services. In 1757 he had a share in the expedition against Rochefort, next year, in the same ship, he served under Boscawen at the taking of Louisburg (Cape Breton). 1759 he became a rear-admiral, and commanded a small squadron intended to destroy a large number of flat-bottomed boats and stores which were being collected at Havre for an invasion of the English coasts. He bombarded the town for two days and nights, and inflicted great loss. Appointed commander-in-chief of the Leeward Islands station and was made Vice-Admiral." CONDITION Red bds with bright Gilt title (fresh with sl edge wear, aged toned spine and canted bottom cnrs) engraved portait frontis with tissue guard, pp vii 222 with rough cut pages, mostly tight and bright with browning to eps. The history of the Kauri built topsail schooner Huia from its launch in 1894 to its loss in New Caledonia in 1951. She sailed as a cargo carrier until 1951, around the shores of New Zealand, across the Tasman, and the Pacific. CONDITION 147 pages with b/w photography, plans and maps. Nice clean copy, apart from gift inscription to revese of front end page. DJ is toned top edge and faded to spine, small nick at spine heel o/w very nice. Very Good/Very Good.

HMS Orpheus was a Jason-class Royal Navy corvette that served as the flagship of the Australian squadron. Orpheus sank off the west coast of Auckland, New Zealand (near Whatipu) on 7 February 1863: 189 crew out of the ship's complement of 259 died in the disaster, making it the worst maritime tragedy to occur in New Zealand waters. CONDITION Blue bds with bright Gilt title, Signed by Author with a personal dedication to Margaret and Ron, Pp xix [1] 140 with b/w photo illus, Mosly very nice and bright internally, bds have slight fade strips to edges, top front cnr faintly bumped. DJ in aceatate cover, has tear at spine ends, chips to spine head, a little stained to interior. Very Good/Very Good. Signed by Author.

London, United Kingdom, John Murray. 1871, 2nd Edition. (ISBN: 1111111111) Half Leather, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. New Zealand 1864-65. Meade was stationed on the Naval vessels Curacoa and Esk. Lieutenant Herbert meade was captured by Pai Mairre Maori at Tataroa, Waikato January 1865 but realeased. He died in England 1868 and his account was edited by his brother and published posthumously. CONDITION Has been professionally rebound with Tan Leather spine and corners, with Tan Buckram cloth. Portions of the text (pages 171 to 176) have been removed at time of rebind. Probably due to being unwholesome to owner in Victorian times as this portion describes Maori politics, attitudes towards Christianity and sex. Pp x [2] 375 with 32 nice engraved illus. Frontis illus of Ohinemuto Geyser laid in with previous owners details to reverse. Otherwise bright and crisp copy. Good.
