ADMIRALTY
The Royal Navy and the Mediterranean Convoys. A Naval Staff History. With a Preface by Malcolm Llewellyn-Jones. [With a Foreword by Admiral Sir Jonathon Band].
Routledge,, [2007]. 4to., First Edition, with 11 coloured plans (8 double-page), 4 full-page diagrams and several illustrations and charts in the text; pictorial boards lettered in white, a fine copy. Naval Staff Histories were produced after WWII in order to provide as full an account of the various actions as was possible at the time. The audience was largely serving officers; some of the volumes were classified, not to restrict their distribution but to allow the writers to be as candid as possible. At this stage of history they represent a uniquely valuable resource. This volume contains Battle Summary 18 (Mediterranean Convoys 1941) and Battle Summary 32 (Malta Convoys 1942), completed by J. Owen and originally issued in 1944 and 1945 respectively. These summaries were combined and extensively revised by Pitcairn-Jones and re-issued in 1957 as Selected Convoys (Mediterranean) 1941-42. By this time Pitcairn-Jones had access to the full records including those captured from German and Italian forces.

ANSCOMB Charles
Submariner. Foreword by Vice-Admiral Sir Sydney Raw.
Kimber,, [1957]. 8vo., First Edition, with a frontispiece and 14 plates on 6, some very faint offsetting from fold-ins to free endpapers; cloth, gilt back, fore-edges lightly spotted else a very good, bright, clean copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the latter chafed (just affecting lettering) at head of backstrip. Arguably the scarcest of British WWII submarine memoirs. The author began the war in Parthian before moving with her to the Mediterranean. In 1941 he transferred to Tempest which was lost on her maiden patrol in 1942. The last section deals with his escape from captivity in Italy. Includes excellent plates of the interior of Parthian. Particularly elusive in good dustwrapper. Enser, p.416; Law, 1108.

BALLARD G. A.
The Black Battlefleet. [A Study of the Capital Ship in Transition. With a Foreword by Admiral of the Fleet Earl Mountbatten of Burma]. SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY
Nautical Publishing Company, Lymington & The Society for Nautical Research, Greenwich,, [1980]. Roy. 4to., First Edition, with very numerous photographs and double-page detailed line drawings in the text; cloth gilt, gilt back, a very good, bright, clean copy in unclipped, lightly sunned dustwrapper. A PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR WITH HIS SIGNED HOLOGRAPH INSCRIPTION ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. The culmination of almost twenty years\' research by the author, this is a standard reference on the evolution of the mid-Victorian Royal Navy. Crucially, Ballard was an eye-witness of the latter part of the period of which he wrote; even in 1929 there were not many men remaining with such experience first-hand. Much of the text appeared first as an extended series of papers in \'The Mariner\'s Mirror\' from 1929 until the author\'s death in 1948.

BARTSCH Max
Was man uber die Kriegsschiffs-Typen wissen muss.
Limpert, Berlin,, [1940]. 8vo., with 33 fine illustrations and 17 drawings in the text, neat contemporary signature on front free endpaper; original printed card covers, a near fine copy in the striking pictorial dustwrapper, the latter unclipped, neatly reinforced at inner edges and lightly rubbed at fold-ins. Remarkably well-preserved wartime propaganda title (from a favoured Nazi printing house) printed in black-letter Gothic type. There are some very useful photographs among the more standard shots; although most of the captions are understandably generic the majority are instantly identifiable. The unusually striking dustwrapper illustrations by the author depicts a (probably imaginary) view of either \'Scharnhorst\' or \'Gneisenau\' accompanied by a \'Hipper\'-class heavy cruiser and escorted by a Type-34 destroyer. The camouflage and fittings suggest the Norwegian campaign of 1940 but we have been unable to confirm that the two capital vessels served together in those waters.. Scarce, especially in this condition
