Separate title page for the New Testament (dated 1682) and the Psalms (1683). Original black leather binding, all edges gilt with decorations. A rare example of gauffering, a technique which involved impressing a pattern into the edges of a book after they had been gilded, using warmed finishing tools or rolls. This labor-intensive form of decoration never became common, and by the mid-1600s it had mostly died out. A few old library stamps and markings on endpapers and verso of title page but no markings on the binding, old name stamp, old handwritten name "Jacob van Caron". Very Good.

Then follow pages 80-83. the total number of pages is 162. Shelf wear on covers but altogether a sound copy. Old name on front endpaper "F. Harrison Hargrave 3rd Q.A.O. Gurkha Rifles". Rare book on the language of Nepal. Historically, the language was first called Khaskura (language of the khas 'rice farmers'), then Gorkhali or Gurkhali (language of the Gurkha) before the term Nepali was taken from Newari. Other names include Parbatiya ("mountain language", identified with the Parbatiya people of Nepal) and Lhotshammikha. There are about 17 million speakers worldwide. It is spoken by about 35% of the population of Nepal, including the Kathmandu Valley. Good.
