An important bibliographic work on rare European books by l'Abbée Henri Duclos and Charles Cailleau with the Supplement by Jacques Charles Brunet.This book was one of the first systematic bibliographies of rare books. It summarized information from great 18th century French auctions including those of the libraries of M. Louis-Jean Gaignat (1769), M. the Comte de Lauraguais (1770), M. Jean de La Leu (1775), as well as that of M. Louis-César de La Baume Le Blanc, Duc de La Vallière (1783-84), the famous sale held at the Hôtel de Bullion (1785) and many others. Each entry often consists of a brief bibliographical description of the book, commentary on rarity or quality, where it appeared in famous sales and sale prices. It represents an important record some of the rarest,precious, and most sought-after books of the ancien régime..

This four-volume catalogue, published between 1848 and 1854, was compiled during the leisure moments of a life of almost incessant scientific research, by the eminent Swiss-born American systematist, geologist and palaeontologist Louis Agassiz (180773). The bibliography was corrected, enlarged and edited by the English geologist, ornithologist, naturalist and systematist, Hugh Edwin Strickland (181153). It was one of the most comprehensive bibliographic works of its time. It provides an extensive list of the zoological and geological literature available before publication of Darwin's <i>On the Origin of Species</i> (1859). Today the bibliography offers a map of the intellectual landscape that influenced early evolutionary theory and other scientific advancements.
