Baldwin, James, Tell Me How Long This Trains Been Gone
Baldwin, James
Tell Me How Long This Trains Been Gone
New York, The Dial Press, 1968. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 1st Edition. Hardcover. First Edition / First Printing. 8vo. Bound in the publisher’s striking white cloth binding with brown spine lettering, complete in the original UNCLIPPED dust jacket priced at $5.95 with a photo of Baldwin on the back. Published at the height of the Civil Rights era, this deeply personal novel explores art, sexuality, race, and freedom through the life of actor Leo Proudhammer. Baldwin called it his most “intimate” work, blending the personal with the political in a voice at once tender and uncompromising. This copy is near fine: bright and clean, a tight binding, and only light evidence of shelf use. The jacket is fresh and unclipped, far better preserved than commonly encountered. A landmark American novel by one of the 20th century’s most essential voices. Near Fine/Near Fine.

Bell, Vanessa, Autograph Letter Signed (Als) "at This Time of Year of Course Sketching out of Doors Is Apt to Be Too Difficult and Cold": Autograph Letter Signed by Vanessa Bell
Bell, Vanessa
Autograph Letter Signed (Als) "at This Time of Year of Course Sketching out of Doors Is Apt to Be Too Difficult and Cold": Autograph Letter Signed by Vanessa Bell
Firle, East Sussex, Vanessa Bell, 1947. First Edition. First Edition. Signed by Author. One leaf of stationery, measuring 6-3/4 by 8 inches, writing on the recto. Autograph letter signed by artist Vanessa Bell, Virginia Woolf's sister, mentioning her partner, the artist Duncan Grant. The letter, on stationery with the blindstamp of Charleston, Firle, Sussex, reads in full: "Nov 6, 1947. "Dear Miss Guerny, Thank you very much for sending me the papers about the anglo french centre. I hope to visit some day though I do not very often get to London now. Please thank Ms. Alford (I hope I have the name right) for the letters to me and Duncan Grant. He will answer when he can but at present is having a rather difficult and anxious time as his mother is very old and seriously ill and he has to go and see her at Twickenham quite often. Later I hope, he may be able to arrange something. At this time of year of course sketching out of doors is apt to be too difficult and cold and the extra darkness makes one feel as if one had very little time for any kind of painting, but I wish I could for the countryside in Autumn is at its most beautiful. With many thanks to you for your letters, yours sincerely, Vanessa Bell." Although married to the writer and critic Clive Bell, Vanessa Bell maintained a relationship with the artist Duncan Grant for decades, sharing the farmhouse of Charleston in the village of Firle; Grant fathered Bell's daughter Angelica (who was raised as Clive Bell's daughter). The couple remained together until Vanessa Bell's death in 1961. Expected fold lines. Fine condition. .

Beston, Henry, Coatsworth, Elizabeth, 33 Christmas and New Year's Cards and Letters; 13 from Henry Beston, 20 from Elizabeth Coatsworth
Beston, Henry, Coatsworth, Elizabeth
33 Christmas and New Year's Cards and Letters; 13 from Henry Beston, 20 from Elizabeth Coatsworth
Nobleboro, Maine, Beston, Henry, Coatsworth, Elizabeth, 1976. Signed by Author. Original autographed cards, letters and stamped envelopes collection. A RARE FIND - Early 1929 drawing and personal greeting by Henry Beston! Original autographed cards, letters and stamped envelopes. Written, signed and addressed by Henry Beston and Elizabeth Coatsworth. Most are addressed to Clayton and Hazel Smith, whose correspondence is referenced in the 2016 definitive Henry Beston biography, Orion on the Dunes, by Daniel G. Payne. An important collection for admirers and collectors of Henry Beston and Elizabeth Coatsworth. From our private Beston Collection, this wonderful selection of Christmas and New Year’s cards spanning a 32-year period from 1944 through 1976, gives rare insight into Henry Beston and Elizabeth Coatsworth's personal lives. Highlights include: Printed poems written by Elizabeth, inscribed and signed by Henry. Illustrations, including a card illustrated by Canadian artist Thoreau MacDonald, who illustrated Henry Beston's Northern Farm. Insights into Henry's holiday plans and his love of his beloved Chimney Farm. For example, in Hingham, Mass. with his in-laws in 1944 "I come against my will for suburban life is un natural to me, and this great childish, neurotic, tired, tense and bedevilled country is a kind of psychic forest I should hate to get lost in." He goes on to describe Maine winters and lament the war. In 1946 with his in-laws, he writes "Nobody could be more kind but oh! how I long for my own woodpile and my own hearth fire!". The naturalist's frustration with the state of the world and his love of the natural order: "All of us who love and honor the earth must close ranks now and fight to the last wall. The destructionists shall not have our lovely and mysterious earth!" "All goes well here, but the press with its porridge of daily violence is a bit too much for me. I prefer wolves and bears." A photograph of the porch at Chimney Farm ".. carved by the last of the ships' figurehead carvers of the region circa 1885." A pre-printed card from 1964 "The Geese Fly South, and Bring You a Message From Us. We are not Sending out any Christmas Cards From Now On. But Our Good Wishes for Your Health and Happiness Will always Go To You." along with a personal message, signed by Elizabeth from both. There are, however, subsequent cards in the collection! This compelling collection has been well-preserved over time. Henry Beston was an American writer and naturalist, and is considered one of the fathers of the modern environmental movement. His now classic observations of Cape Cod are captured in his classic, The Outermost House, written after Beston spent what he called "a year of life on the Great Beach of Cape Cod", and has been called one of the motivating factors behind the establishment of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Author Rachel Carson said that Beston was the only author who ever influenced her writing. Beston married writer Elizabeth Coatsworth in 1929. Elizabeth Coatsworth was an American writer of fiction and poetry for children and adults. She won the 1931 Newbery Medal from the American Library Association, an award recognizing The Cat Who Went to Heaven as the previous year's "most distinguished contribution to American literature for children." A prolific writer whose publications spanned more than fifty years, she produced over ninety books of fiction and poetry for children. She also wrote numerous adult novels, books of verse, and works about Maine, and edited a volume of her husband’s writings. .

Burgess, Anthony as Kell, Joseph [pseudonym], One Hand Clapping. Dedication Copy Inscribed by Burgess/Kell to His Wife
Burgess, Anthony as Kell, Joseph [pseudonym]
One Hand Clapping. Dedication Copy Inscribed by Burgess/Kell to His Wife
London, Peter Davies, 1961. First Edition. Hardcover. First Edition. Hardcover. Signed by Author. First Edition. First Impression. The Dedication Copy, inscribed by the author under his pseudonym to his wife, Hazel (Lynne) Burgess, on the front endpaper in blue ink: “To Hazel / for her birthday / 28th Sept, 1961 / Joseph Kell”—beneath which Burgess has added, in red ink, the revealing note: “Joseph Kell is / Anthony Burgess.” This is the second of only two novels published under the “Joseph Kell” pseudonym and among the scarcest Burgess titles to appear with an authorial presentation. The association could not be closer: Burgess dedicated the book to Hazel (Lynne), his first wife, to whom he would dedicate many of his works during their marriage, making this an extraordinary copy in every respect. A very good example, showing some foxing and evidence of use in the publisher’s nubby yellow and red spotted cloth, with metallic blue spine lettering. Housed in a near fine, bright blue pictorial dustwrapper (price-clipped, and likely supplied). Burgess (1917–1993), best remembered for A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (1962), published the year after ONE HAND CLAPPING, was one of the most versatile literary figures of the 20th century. This novel—written under the Kell pseudonym—reflects his early exploration of cultural decline, materialism, and the “dumbing down” of society, themes that would continue to haunt his work. A true high point for any Burgess collection. Very Good +/Near Fine.

Truman Capote\'s original Birth Certificate - issued in the parish of New Orleans & registered the 3rd day of October, 1924 & showing the birth of Truman Streckfus Persons, September 30th, 1924. Lillie Mae was off to New York to make a new life leaving Truman to the care & nurturing of his Monroeville relatives. Outside of the cousins Truman lived with as a child, Lucille Faulk Ingram & her daughter, Cecilia, were his closest kin.
