Original maroon cloth, title gilt to spine, and stamped to upper board in blind with price 3/6. xvi+328pp. Edges a little rubbed from use. "T? Darling Matchett\'s" name in ink neatly to front endpaper, dated 1902. Abbott\'s best-known work is his 1884 - the \'mathematical\' or science fiction novella "Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions". "Via Latina: A First Latin Book" was first published in 1880 and sold around the world. According to the Imperial War Museum database, the presumed owner of the book, Darling Matchett was a conscientious objector.

Matteo Giulio Bartoli (born Nov. 22, 1873, Albona d\'Istria, Austria-Hungary [now Labin, Croatia]died Jan. 23, 1946, Turin, Italy) was a linguist who emphasised the geographic spread of linguistic changes and their interpretation in terms of history and culture. In an important early study, Das Dalmatische (1906; "Dalmatian"), he documented and analysed the now-extinct Romance dialect of the Adriatic island of Veglia (Krk).

Built Before the Flood. The Problem of the Tiahuanaco Ruins.
London, Faber & Faber, 1943. A good copy in original dust-wrapper. With 20 half-tone and b/w diagrams, including map. Generally a good copy with a small amount of damp damage to spine tail affecting both dust-wrapper and book. War Economy paper. Used; Good Hans Schindler Bellamy appears to be one of the pseudonyms of Rudolf Elmayer von Vestenbrugg. Born in Pola (Pula), then in Austria-Hungary in 1888. He had a varied and not well documented past. During the 1930s he became a leading proponent of the now generally discredited theories of the Austrian cosmologist, Hans Hoerbiger, whose ideas were officially adopted during the Third Reich. After the war Bellamy continued to write on this topic in English and German, much of his work centring on the ruins of Tiahuanaco in Bolivia. Hardback.
