Handbill for Command Performance of Bulwer-Lytton's "Money" Given for Queen Victoria
1854. Handbill for a command performance of a comedy by Edward Bulwer-Lytton called MONEY, given for Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle on January 12, 1854. Printed on a single folded sheet of lace-trimmed paper with an embossed imperial insignia at the top. The final name on the cast list, the director's wife, has been crossed off and a different name written in (perhaps an understudy). Mild yellowing down the right side on the front; horizontal crase and one corner crease on the back. Very mild wear on the right edge. Otherwise in well-preserved shape for its age. This performance of MONEY was directed by Shakespearian actor Charles Kean (1811-1868). Very Good .

Small hole in one of the color plates following page 548. Pages securely attached despite damaged hinges. Volume 65 of THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS, containing issues from July 4 through December 26, 1874, along with the 32-page Christmas edition of December 16. Includes reporting on the Spanish Civil War, a column on page 151 explaining the game of baseball (which was new to England at the time), and a visit to Iceland by King Christian IX of Denmark. Among the many fine engravings are a depiction of the Boston Red Stockings and Athletic Club of Philadelphia playing baseball at Prince's Garden, Brompton; a portrait of the crucified Christ; a portrait of Empress Maria Alexandrovna of Russia; and a two-page spread of the Battle of Trafalgar. Measures approx. 16" x 12.

The color foldout is badly torn. Pages 643-648 are nearly detached. Occasional smudges and pencil scrawls, but otherwise, text easily legible. Volume 50 of THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS, with weekly issues spanning January 19 through June 29, 1867. Contains reporting on the Fenian Rising in Ireland; the Paris International Exhibition; the Treaty of London granting independence to Luxembourg; and the coronation of Franz Josef as King of Hungary upon the establishment of the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary. Among the many fine engravings are a full-page depiction of Christ blessing children; numerous illustrations of the Paris Exhibition; Queen Victoria laying the first stone of the Royal Albert Hall; and Franz Joseph's coronation in Budapest.
