Answer to a Paper, Entituled, the Grievances of His Majesty&Apos;S Subjects Residing Within the Principality of Wales, in Respect of the Court of the Council in the Marches of Wales. With the Particular Conveniencies of That Court
Answer to a Paper, Entituled, the Grievances of His Majesty&Apos;S Subjects Residing Within the Principality of Wales, in Respect of the Court of the Council in the Marches of Wales. With the Particular Conveniencies of That Court
London, Not Stated, 1689. Brochure/Pamphlet. A very scarce pamphlet discussing the Council of Wales and the Marches in the seventeenth century, just before its abolition later that year. A very scarce work. Seen only once at auction in last 40 years. Collated from ESTC, complete. ESTC citation number R29059. The signatures run as [2], B-C2. Disbound, with a small amount of backstrip retained. Written and published anonymously. This pamphlet is a reply to a pamphlet entitled 'The Grievances of His Majestie's Subjects Residing Within the Principality of Wales&apos. The original pamphlet was not in favour of the court of the Council of Wales and the Marches, whereas the author of this pamphlet was. In this work, the author takes each grievance raised in the original pamphlet, totalling in fourteen, and structurally argues their own point of view in favour of the court. The pamphlet is arguing in defence of the Council, and is against the possibility of the Council being abolished. The exact date of this pamphlet is unknown, however the Council of Wales and the Marches was abolished on the 25th July 1689. The council was abolished after the 1688 Glorious Revolution, which established William III and Mary II as monarchs. The historian John Davies states that there was little protest in Wales when the Council was demolished. An interesting insight into the seventeenth century politics of England and Wales. Prior owner's ink inscription, 'XV', to the head of the title page. Disbound, with a small amount of backstrip retained. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with the odd spo and the odd mark. Fold to the centre of the text block. Prior owner's ink inscription, 'XV', to the head of the title page. A couple of ink spots to the title page. Light tidemark to the head and tail of the leaves. Prior owner's ink lining to page 3, striking through twelve words. Good . Ill.: None. Good .

A Discourse for Taking Off the Tests and Penal Laws About Religion
A Discourse for Taking Off the Tests and Penal Laws About Religion
London, Randal Taylor, 1687. First edition. Disbound. A very sarce first edition of a pamphlet written against the penal laws and test acts that were in place in England, persecuting those who did not belong to the Church of England. A very scarce work. The first edition of this work. This work is a quarto. The signatures run as A-F4. ESTC citation number R3313. Collated, complete. 'A Discourse For Taking Off the Tests and Penal Laws About Religion' is an interesting working discussing the need to get rid of the test acts and penal laws that were in place in England in the late seventeenth century. The acts and laws were put in place to restrict Roman Catholics, imposing civil disabilities upon them, in an attempt to stop them from practicing their religion, and turn them instead to the Church of England. The author of this work was presumably Catholic, and so had been persecuted for their religion over the course of their life. This was an interesting era for religion in Britain, as James II came to the throne as was a Catholic, as opposed to the previous Church of England monarchs that had previously been at the head of Britain. This is an important and interesting work, as it shows the state of Britain during the religious turmoil in the lead up to the Glorious Revolution, which happened in November of 1688, in which James II was deposed. At the time that this work was published, James II had published his 'Declaration of Indulgence', which tried to establish a system of free religion in Britain by abolishing the penal laws. Written anonymously. Printed by Randal Taylor in London. A very scarce religious pamphlet arguing for the abolition of penal laws and the test acts. Disbound. Externally, the outer wraps age age-toned with some handling marks. Edgewear to the extremities to the textblock. Disbound, though each separate gathering is still attached. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with a couple of light spots and marks. Fair . Ill.: None. Fair .

To Which, After a Brief Narration of the Fact, Is Prefixed, an Account of the Remarkable Discovery of a Human Skeleton at Thistle-Hill: A Detail of All the Judicial Proceedings from the Time of the Bones Being Found
Knaresborough, Hargrove and Sons, 1808. Leather. A pleasing ninth edition of this popular work describing in depth the 1759 trail of Eugene Aram for the murder of Daniel Clark. The ninth edition of this work. A very scarce edition, with none of this ninth edition held institutionally. Collated, complete. With one page of publisher's adverts to the rear. This work is a detailed account of the 1759 trail of Eugene Aram. Aram was convicted with the 1744 murder of Daniel Clark, a shoemaker who had been an intimate friend of Aram. Clark suddenly disappeared, and whilst Aram's garden and house were searched, there was no evidence to convict him of any crime. In 1758, a skeleton was dug up at St. Robert's Cave in Knaresborough. Aram was soon after arrested, and sent to York for a trial. Aram conducted his own defence, and was found guilty, and condemned to be executed on the 6th August 1759. He confessed his guilt, and unsuccessfully attempted suicide the night before his execution. The trial and murder was a sensational news story that saw much attention. This was increased by the ballad by Thomas Hood, titled 'The Dream of Eugene Aram', and a novel by Edward Bulwer-Lytton. Aram is also referenced in works by the authors Frances Hodgson Burnett, George Orwell, and P.G. Wodehouse. In the original half calf binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Discolouration to the head of the front board. Rubbing to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the extremities. A few light marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound.
