The Freeman family owned the highly profitable sugar plantation 'Freeman's Upper' in Antigua. With over 200 acres, they owned over 160 slaves at a time.To the rear pastedown is a lengthy insight into the Freeman family, written in Antigua on November 25th 1789. The note reads: 'Thomas Freeman the son of Thomas and Ann Freeman born Oct. 19, 1756. Married August 9. 1785 to Christian Ffrye daughter of Francis Ffrye and Dorothy his wife, born the 23. March 1766&apos. This is followed by information on the births, deaths and baptisms of ten individuals over the course of the following century, concluding with Caroline Freeman, who died at Bath Jan 23rd 1857.Loosely inserted is a leaf of paper detailing the births of the Mack family, detailing seven individuals, beginning with Louisa Mack, born October 15th 1758 in Leicester, to Henry Mack, born August 7th 1773 in the Parish of Songwood.A beautifully bound collection of very scarce Anglican works with an important family provenance and connection to the Slave Trade. In a full morocco binding, with gilt detailing and mental clasps. Clasps in full working order, with boards lightly warped to aid in their closure. A mid-19th century edition of this work, finely bound with a morocco spine and ivorine boards, edged with a lacquered brass trim, and decorated to the front board with pictorial gilt. Brass trim suggests a previous removal of a now absent clasp. All edges gilt, with moire silk end papers. Accompanied by a full calf chemise with a brass clasp, lined with cream silk. Bourgeois 32mo. to the bottom of the title page. A Book of Common Prayer and administration of the Sacraments, and other rites and ceremonies of the Church, according to the use of the United Church of England and Ireland. Together with the Psalter or Psalms of David, as they are to be sung or said in churches, and the form and manner of making, ordaining, and consecrating of Bishops, Priests, and Deacons.Undated, dated through copies held at the National Trust Libraries. In a quarter morocco and ivorine binding, with a full calf chemise. Externally, very smart, with just a little loss to the red colour to the front board. Gilt remains bright. Lacking brass clasp to the book. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for a scattering of spots to the first and last couple of pages. Chemise is sound, though a little rubbed, and leather is split to the front joint. Front hinge is reasonably firm. Losses and a split to the leather of the flap holding one side of the clasp. Leather which is attached to the clasp on this side is tender. The leather to the other flap appears very smart, but there are tears to the silk of the lining. The silk, which is a little soiled, is lifting to the edges of the lining in a couple of places, and may tear upon further handling. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: Not Stated. Very Good Indeed .

A detailed exploration of Christianity throughout history, focusing on its presence in Ancient Rome at the time of Emperor Trajan, the second of the Five Good Emperors of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. Among medieval Christian theologians, Trajan was considered a virtuous pagan. In dealing with and prosecuting Christians, he acted typically in the interests of justice, and to reflect "the spirit of the age" enforcing the rule that Christians who refused to recant were to be executed "for obstinacy". Bound in quarter calf with marbled boards. Externally, sound with rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine with the odd mark to the boards. Front hinge tender.
