Egan, Rory B.; Mark A. Joyal (Eds.) - Daimonopylai: Essays in Classics and the Classical Tradition Presented to Edmund G. Berry

Winnipeg, Manitoba, University Of Manitoba | Centre For Hellenic Civilization, 2004. First edition. Softcover. pp. xv, 496. 8vo. Royal 8vo. No detectable flaws; near fine. Edmund Barry was Professor of Classics for almost 40 years at the University of Manitoba, in Winnipeg. He was known (he passed away in 2005) as a charming, cultivated, man with an astounding knowledge of the many thousands of books in his library (most of which he sold, over the years to 0 Books). Frequently, when we were stumped by the correct translation of a Latin text, or piece of incunabula, Dr. Berry was able to decipher the troublesome phrase not only with ease, but with helpful comments and additional information. He is sorely missed. This book (from which the name of \'Manitoba\' is perhaps derived), contains 34 essays submitted in honour of Dr. Berry, both as an academic and colleague. Their scope is broad, as was the range of Dr. Berry\'s knowledge and interests, but most deal with various aspects of the Greek and Latin classics. There is also a short biography of Dr. Berry, submitted by his two daughters. The number of copies of this homage is unknown, but it was probably limited to hundreds. .
