Hitchcock, Michael (ed.), King, Victor T. (ed.). - Images of Malay-Indonesian Identity.

Kuala Lumpur/ Oxford etc., Oxford University Press, 1997, 1st ed., XVI,(2),282 pag., b/w photogr. illustrations on plates, hardcover with dustjacket. = South-East Asian Social Science Monographs. The term \'Indonesia\' was coined for the Malay Archipelago by Europeans in the 19th century. A hundred years later this name was taken on by the former Dutch East Indies on independence, when the inhabitants of the archipelago had nationhood thrust on them. The contributors to this book chart how the various identities of different parts of the new nation jostled in an attempt to forge a new Indonesian identity where, even though Malays were an overwhelming majority in the country, common characteristics were often far from clear cut. Dustjacket a bit edgeworn.
