This autobiography, edited by Walpole (who printed the first edition of two hundred copies for private circulation at Strawberry Hill in 1764) was taken from one of two manuscript copies made after Herbert’s death. Edward Herbert, first Baron Herbert of Cherbury and first Baron Herbert of Castle Island (1582?–1648), diplomat and philosopher. ODNB ‘... In it, in a lively and somewhat tongue-in-cheek fashion, Herbert tells the story of his life and ideas up to the time of his recall from France in 1624. In the course of his story he throws light on his views on such matters as duelling and education, herbal remedies and religion ...’ Omitting all mention of his scholarly pursuits and attainments in the fields of poetry pursuits and attainments in the fields of poetry and philosophy. The autobiography only reaches the year 1624 breaking off with Hernert’s recall from his embassy to France. Its greatest value is its brilliant picture of Herbert’s contemporaries and and of the manners and events of his time.
