First UK edition. Very scarce. As the first published work from the author, collected from a series of her lectures, this piece concerns itself with the physical and mental development of women and girls. With specific reference to the preparation of young women for motherhood. As well as outlining Blackwell's own four general principles to understanding human physiology, the work emphasized the importance of social stability for girls and women in relation to the maintenance of their health. Written by Elizabeth Blackwell, an Anglo-American physician, notable as the first woman to earn a medical degree in the United States, and the first woman on the Medical Register of the General Medical Council for the United Kingdom. Blackwell played an important role in both the United States and the United Kingdom as a social reformer, and was a pioneer in promoting education for women in medicine.
