Antverpiae ( Antwerpen ), Ioannes Galle execud., 1634, format small in-4°, 19,5 x 14 cm, Engraved title + engraved title plate + 38 portrait engravings (40 plates in total, complete). Bound in a later (19th c. ?) marbled paper cover. Very finely engraved suite of portraits in clear and strong impressions. The portraits are reproductions of the paintings which hung in the abbey church of Liesses (French Hainaut, near the Belgian border). Among them portraits of Christ, Holy Mary, Elias, Saint John, but also of Blosius (one of the most famous members of the congregation), Ignatius of Loyola...The abbey, founded in 751 was already once completely destroyed by the vikings in 881. The final coup came in 1791 when the abbey, with most of the paintings (here depicted) was completely erased by the French revolutionaries.. .
