The ABC books aimed not only to teach reading but also to educate in righteous Christianity.From the 18th century Sami became an important teaching and church language in Northern Sweden among the Sami people. The ABC books served as a bridge to spread Christianity and make it easier for priests and teachers in their work with the Sami population.Sami ABC books from the 18th century, such as Pehr Fjellström's Lapland ABC book (1744), in addition to the alphabet and edifying texts, also contained Christian prayers and catechisms to spread and strengthen Christianity. These books aimed not only to teach reading but also to educate in a righteous Christianity, just like the Swedish ABC books.
