John Wilson (1892-1980) was born and lived his life at Tomonie Banavie at the bottom of the Great Glen opposite Fort William in the West Highlands of Scotland. The once crofting township of Tomionie slopes down to the Caledonian Canal with some marshy ground adjacent hence the Bard's pen name. For many years he worked on the West Highland Railway.
