A very scarce first edition autobiography of Scottish merchant, Philip Barrington Ainslie, including an account of his time working in Jamaica. The very scarce first edition of this work. In the original blue cloth binding. This autobiography of Philip Barrington Ainslie, published here under the pseudonym of Philo Scotus, contains an extended account of his attempt to become a planter in Jamaica. This coincides with the rise of Scottish emigrants in the eighteenth to early nineteenth century that wished to make enough money in the Caribbean to enable them return to a better life in Britain, though not necessarily in Scotland.With twelve leaves of publisher's advertisements to the rear. In the original blue cloth binding. Externally, smart, with darkening to the spine and rubbing to the extremities. Hinges are starting but firm. With a Sandeman Public Library bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the odd spot and a contemporary ink inscription to the front free endpaper. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
