Reading ribbon. \'De eerste pogrom in de geschiedenis vond plaats in de zomer van het jaar 38 in Egyptes grootste stad Alexandrië. Waarschijnlijk kostte deze slachtpartij duizenden Joden het leven. De beroemde Joodse filosoof Philo, een ooggetuige, heeft deze geweldsuitbarsting tegen Joden beschreven. Zijn verslag \'Pogrom in Alexandrië\' is samen met \'Gezantschap naar Caligula\' voor het eerst uit het Grieks vertaald door de historicus drs. G. H. de Vries. Philo\'s verslag is kort en bondig. Het geeft een goed beeld van wat er gebeurde: de aanleiding, het falen van de overheid, de anti-Joodse terreur en ten slotte de straf van God voor de man die het allemaal had laten gebeuren, de Romeinse gouverneur Flaccus. In zijn geschrift Pogrom in Alexandrië licht hij ons over dit alles in. (...) In een tweede geschrift, \'Gezantschap naar Caligula\', vertelt Philo ons dat onder zijn leiding een Joods gezantschap naar keizer Caligula in Rome gaat. Het gezantschap wil bij hem de Joodse zaak bepleiten. Philo beschrijft de teleurstellende ervaringen die het gezantschap opdoet. (...) Deze twee geschriften zijn nu voor het eerst uit het Grieks origineel vertaald door de historicus drs. G. H. de Vries. Hij heeft zijn vertaling vergezeld laten gaan van een uitvoerige inleiding en allerlei aantekeningen. Daardoor worden wij breed ingelicht over de hoofdpersonen in beide geschriften en over Philo zelf. Verder ontvangen wij informatie over het verschijnsel van de Jodenhaat in de antieke wereld, de positie van de Joden in Egypte en in Alexandrië in het bijzonder en allerlei historische achtergronden.
