Toch klink zijn 'click' beslist anders dan die van u of mij. Het verschil? Die schuilt wellicht in de volgende anekdote. Ooit legde men de grote Coco Chanel een jurkje voor - gekocht op de markt voor een paar ordinaire franken - dat na een eerste blik precies één van haar peperdure haute couture creaties was. Chanel keek er naar - minachtend, hooguit een fractie van een seconde - en sprak toen de woorden: "Inderdaad, nèt één van mijn jurkjes, en toch weer niet." Guillaume Desprez, 1670. Modern perkament. 12mo. Early contrefaçon edition. Both Brunet and Graesse give a 1670 edition with 365 pages of main text as the second edition of the Pensées. Tchemerzine delves a little deeper into the matter, acknowledging two contrefaçon (pirated) editions. The present edition is not the first pirated edition, as that edition supposedly has errors in pagination which do not occur in this edition. However, we think the present is not the second pirated edition either. Tchemerzine remarks: "Une autre contrafaçon sous la même date [1670], avec collation identique, a un titre un peu différent. Le monogramme de G. Desprez y est remplacé par le fleuron des Provinciales, éd. in-4 de 1657 [Tchemerzine V 62]." Although the title page of our edition does not bear the monogramme of Desprez, neither does it bear the fleuron of the mentioned edition (although another fleuron is present). Curiously, also, the privilege is dated "le 2. Ianvier 1679", which is odd at least, for an edition supposedly published in 1670. Also, the privilege (with corrections on the verso) is in the rear of the book as opposed to the front. 12mo. *Tchemerzine 1977, V 71, cf. *Brunet IV 398 / *Graesse V 146. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.
