[Alphabets]. Morgan, Olga, Evans, Edmund (1826-1905 - illustrations).
The Twins\' ABC. Engraved and printed by Edmund Evans.
London, Liberty & Co., Lawrence & Bullen, n.d. (1904), (58) pag., 26 full-page woodengraved illustrations in black, olive green and pink to the letters of the alphabet and original boards illustrated in olive green, black and red after Edmund Evans, 19,7 x 16,7 cm. = Rare alphabet, not in the usual reference-works. One of the last books illustrated by Edmund Evans. He was born in Southwark, London in 1826 and, in 1940, began an apprenticeship with the wood-engraver Ebenezer Landells (1808-1860) in London, who, in 1842, launched Punch magazine. Following the end of his apprenticeship in 1847, Evan set up in business as a woodengraver and colour printer in London. Much of his early work was for Illustrated London News. In the 1850s he started designing and printing covers of yellow-backs and other books. Over the four decades artists he commissioned to draw illustrations for the books he printed included Kate Greenaway, Randolph Caldecott, George Cruikshank and Walter Crane. In 1892 Evans retired to Ventnor in the Isle of Whight, leaving his sons, Wilfred and Herbert, to run the business. He died in Ventnor on 21 August 1905 (source: Art History Net].Spine pasted over with contemporary cloth. Final letter-leaf reattached; small tear closed in last leaf.
