Illustré d\'une vignette sur la page de titre de l\'Errotika.  Recueil rédigé par Mirabeau alors emprisonné à Vincennes en même temps que le marquis de Sade, puisant dans les sources antiques relatives à diverses pratiques sexuelles telles que l\'onanisme, le tribalisme, la sodomie, la nymphomanie, etc : ""L\'auteur, outre le talent de posséder parfaitement les langues mortes, a celui d\'écrire très bien la sienne, de plaisanter légèrement et de singer souvent Voltaire : dans les tableaux très sales qu\'il présente parfois, il se sert toujours d\'expressions honnêtes ou techniques: du reste, il paraît fort versé dans l\'art des voluptés"" (critique de l\'époque, citée dans Gay-Lem. II, 151). Selon la légende, le livre fut poursuivi avec une telle vigueur par les autorités que seuls quatorze exemplaires de la première édition ont survécu - un nombre dont on peut presque assurer qu\'il est inexact. Après une deuxième édition en 1792, l\'ouvrage a été mis à l\'index. Une autre édition a été détruite en 1826 par la Cour royale de Paris, et deux autres poursuites ont été engagées en 1856 et 1868 pour ""outrage à la morale publique et aux bonnes mœurs"". Illustrated with a vignette on the title page of Errotika.  Collection written by Mirabeau imprisoned in Vincennes at the same time as the Marquis de Sade. Various curiosities are culled from ancient writings relating to sexual practices such as onanism, tribalism, sodomy, nymphomania, etc. : ""The author, in addition to the talent of perfectly mastering ancient languages, writes very well in his own, joking lightly and often drawing on Voltaire\'s style: in the very dirty pictures he sometimes presents, he always uses honest or technical expressions: besides, he seems well versed in the art of voluptuousness"" (contemporary 18th century review, quoted in Gay-Lem. II, 151). According to the legend, the book was relentlessly censored by the authorities and only fourteen copies of the first edition had survived - an estimate which seems to be quite inaccurate. After a second edition in 1792, the book was prohibited and included in the papal index. [France], no place, no publisher, ca. 1863-1890. 13 oblong sheets (22.3 x 29.2 cm), all with fine watercolour paintings, either full-sized, or smaller, in a drawn rectangular frame. And one drawing on slightly smaller paper, more sketchy, in pencil. = Count Roger de Bouillé (1819-1906) was a French mountaineer (one would say "pyreneeist" rather than alpinist, as he climbed solely in the Pyrenees mountains), but also a draftsman, illustrator, watercolourist and author, under the pseudonym "JAM", of several books on his ascents and explorations. In 1865, he settled in the town of Pau and from there he explored the western Pyrenees. In his works he described not only the itineraries, mountains, and landscapes, but also the local flora, fauna, and history. The present suite, however, consists mostly of drawings made during a voyage to the French-Mediterranean coast (Côte d'Azur), in 1890. One is dated much earlier. Present are: 1. Venezia, Andrea Poletti, 1711. Large 4to (26.6 x 20.6 cm). Half title, title page, 76 pp.; four hand-coloured engraved plates on three leaves. Contemporary blind soft boards, spine with later cloth strip. = Two papers by Count Marsigli, bound together with a single title, being the first edition of his famous work on the history of the seas, and a treatise on the scale insect causing galls in oak trees from which crimson dye was originally extracted. The first paper deals with red coral, with description and illustration of the living polypes. Marsigli was the first to understand that corals were not plants. The second paper, also finely illustrated, shows the true origin and nature of the crimson dye, giving a detailed description of the coccid genus Kermes (Hemiptera). Both papers are very rare. Small, weak, old stamp on front board and half title, edges slightly frayed, paper repair to lower edge of title page, otherwise a very good and clean copy. Nissen ZBI, 2700.
