London: "Sold at the Society's Apartments, Burlington House; and by Longman, Green, Longmans And Roberts, and William And Norgate, 1861. 1st Edition. Period binding, stamped in gilt to back strip, black ink stain to all edges. iv, 200; xxiv, 47, [1 (blank)]; [2], 99, [1 (blank)]; lvi, [1 (blank)] pp. Illustrated with hand-colored lithographs (with light green ink only) by W[alter]. [Hood] Fitch (1817-1892). 8-1/2" x 5-7/8" Thomas Anderson "studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating with an MD in 1853. While at University he became interested in botany, and earned a gold medal for the best local collection of plants, and assisted in arranging the Indian herbarium. In 1854 he entered the Bengal medical service, and went to Calcutta. Subsequently he went to Delhi, where he was actively engaged during the mutiny, returning to Calcutta in 1858. His health failing, he came home, and, the steamer being detained at Aden for some days, he made an interesting collection of the plants of that region, upon which he based his ‘Florula Adenensis,’ published in 1860." [wiki]. Walter Fitch was a botanical illustrator from Scotland. Fitch's illustration have appeared in Curtis's Botanical Magazine, most publications issued by Royal Botanical Gardens Kew, George Bentham's 'Handbook of the British Flora', James Bateman's "A Monograph of Odontoglossum" and William Hooker's "A century of Orchidaceous Plants". "Fitch was made a fellow of the Linnean Society in 1857." [wiki]. The previous owner inscription reads "Skipper Kent 1953". Skipper Kent was a restauranteur in the San Francisco Bay Area, owning Zombie Village in Oakland and Skipper Kent's in San Francisco. These "tiki" inspired restaurants were his pride and joy as he was already and avid collector of Polynesian art and artifacts. Kent was also an avid orchid collector, so we suspect this was in his library at one time, with his interest in botany. The embossed library stamp comes from the library of Herman Knoche (1870-1945). Knoche was born in San Jose, California and studied botany at Stanford University. He moved to France to further his studies at University of Montpellier; his particular interest was island vegetation. Boards and edges are rubbed/(scuffed), some tears to the paper wrapped boards (especially lower board and corners), some soiling to boards and back strip, blue ink inscription to ffep - possible previous signature, some soiling to end papers (particularly to fore-edge), embossed library stamp to head of "List of Papers" (a.k.a. table of contents), age toning to leaves, water damage to fore-edge of leaves as well as a bit to tail -going towards middle of leaves, water damage is most noticeable on the leaves with illustrations (see photos), some light chipping and creasing to lower corner of last few leaves. A Good copy.

Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832), English social philosopher whose influence on the development of economic thought and theory was very great. Burton was an Edinburgh lawyer and a professional writer for literary journals. He established his name as an author with the "Life and Correspondence of David Hume" (1846), in which he threw light for the first time on Hume as an economist. Before editing "Benthamiana" he played an important role in assisting Sir John Bowring in editing the works of Bentham. "The more the matter is investigated the clearer it becomes that Burton, not Bowring, was the effectively responsible editor." - J. H. Burns, Emeritus Professor of History, University College London, in "Bentham and the Scots" (The Bentham Project, 2004). F-5 IN .

BENTHAM, Jeremy
Church of Englandism and Its Catechism Examined
1822. BENTHAM, Jeremy. CHURCh-OF-ENGLANDISM AND ITS CATECHISM EXAMINED: preceded by strictures on the exclusionary system, as pursued in the national society's schools interspersed with parallel views of the English and Scottish established and non-established churches: and concluding with remidies proposed for abuses indicated: and an examination of the parliamentary system of church reform lately pursued, and still pursuing: including the proposed new churches. Jeremy Benthem (English, 1748-1832), an influential philosopher, jurist, and reformer, devoted his life to the reform of legislation. He maintained the theory that "utility is the test and measure of virtue," - that the happiness of the greatest number should be the object of legislation. Pierre-Etienne-Louis [Etienne] Dumont (Swiss, 1759-1829), is best known as the editor and promoter of the work of Jeremy Bentham, They met in 1788, when Dumont had a position n in the household of former prime minister William Petty, now first marquess of Lansdowne. Dumont began to translate into French material written by Jeremy Bentham in 1789: this comprised extracts from Bentham's proposals for the reorganization of the French judicial system, and was published in the Courier de Provence in the spring of 1790, followed a year later by a French abstract of Bentham's panopticon proposal which he sent to Paris in the hope that it might influence government reforms of the French prison system. During his residence in England, till 1815, Dumont produced his 'extraits or abstracts' of Jeremy Bentham's publications. The first and most celebrated was the Traite. .
